Because I met Isabelle Bonhomme, my rescued
mare, Sandy Rose found her “Forever Home”.
Because of Isabelle’s Kindness and Love for
Horses, Sandy Rose has the love and care she
so desperately needed for the rest of her
time here on Earth.
For 25 years, this dun mare gave everything
she had to get along with people. To do each
humans bidding to the best of her ability.
Often for people who failed to take decent
care of her. Finally brought down to nothing
but a Living Skeleton by old age, poor feed,
a gut full of worms and teeth that
desperately needed to be taken care of by a
Professional, she hung her old head and
turned her back to humans. Silently she
suffered and waited to die.
Her story is under the “Our Archives” part
of my website. Under the “Abuse” section. It
does me no good to rescue an animal unless
that animal can go on to a Loving and Kind
“Forever Home”. And Thanks to Isabelle
Bonhomme of Vilna, Alberta, Canada she now
has that home where she has become fat and
content. Her once dead eyes now sparkle.
Where once she turned away from humans in
abject misery, she now follows Isabelle like
a big, old Puppy Dog. Her love for Isabelle
is profound.
This then is not a story about Sandy Rose,
but the story about this wonderful young
woman who left her native “Quebec” and moved
across Canada to Alberta. A young woman who
spoke only French. A young woman faced with
learning not only the English Language but
our Western Cultures and Western Heritage.
Alberta was a strange and exciting place for
this girl from French Quebec. And Isabelle
has found her place here in Alberta.
Her awesome ability to bring out the best in
horses. I humbly take off my hat to this
young lady who now makes Alberta home.
Horses that come into her care know only
Love, Compassion and the very best of Care.
Isabelle puts many of us “Born and Raised
Horse People” to shame!!!
Isabelle Bonhomme’s Story
Vilna, Alberta, Canada

These
young horses are already well on
the road to "Physical Recovery" in
this photo. Isabelle put in a great amount of TIME
and MONEY getting them well. They came to her very
UNDERWEIGHT, covered in LICE, with PNEUMONIA, With
FUNGUS INFECTIONS and absolutely NO TRUST with
Humans.
I always loved horses, even as a small
child. My parents, all my family lived in
towns/cities. We didn’t even have a dog or a
cat, let alone horses. My parents did not
understand my passion for horses and were
afraid for me. Even around 9 years old, I
would get on my bike and go miles out into
the country to just sit there on the edge of
the road and look at horses. I knew then
that someday I would have my very own horse.
I was determined even at that young age.
By 13 years old, I was working at a Trail
Riding Dude Ranch as a guide. I was going to
school but still was there as much as
possible. Then in the summer months, I
worked 6 or 7 days a week there, often until
midnight. I had lots of fights with my
parents but my heart was set on being with
horses and one day owning my very own horse.
And at 14 years old, finally I bought my
first horse!!! She was a 3 year old buckskin
mare. I spent all my spare time with her and
trained her myself. She was not just a
horse. She was my Friend. She was my
Partner. She was everything to me. I had her
for 2 years but with working so many long
hours for the cost of boarding her, I had no
time to spend with her. Sadly, I sold her. I
still miss her to this very day. I still am
sorry I sold her.
That was the only horse I had in Quebec. I
continued to work with horses though.
Learning everything I could. About Vet Care,
about Proper Feeding, about caring for their
Teeth and Hooves, about Training,
everything. I continued to work and learn.
In February of 2006, we had a darling little
boy. I was learning as much as I could about
this wonderful province, called Alberta. In
my Quebec, my home province that I still
love, I was feeling so apart from everybody
else. If you wore a cowboy hat and wrangler
jeans and said you loved horses, everyone
laughed and made fun of you. But there,
although we owned our own house, we did not
own any land. No land for the horses I knew
I must have someday.
My husband agreed to come to Alberta and
find employment. Which he did immediately. 2
months later, we put our house up for sale
in Quebec and I moved to Alberta to a Farm
my husband had bought that I had never even
seen yet! I got on the plane with my then 4
month old baby boy and our big dog (I love
dogs too) and arrived here in Alberta.
NOW FOR THE HARD PART………….. My dream was
coming True!!! I was now in Alberta!!! But I
knew only a couple of words of English? And
I was so alone in this new place. No family.
My husband working far away in Fort
McMurray. In Quebec, only the rich can have
their own land and keep their horses on
their own land so they don’t have to board
them somewhere else. But I knew I was at
HOME!!! My new home!!!
I am busy learning English and caring for my
little boy. Best of all, I have been
purchasing some horses to save some of them
and others to train and sell.
What I learned in Quebec is helping me here
with these horses. I make sure my horses are
cared for to the best of my ability. Which
includes, extra care in the cold winter,
deworming on a regular schedule, the farrier
on a regular schedule, a Vet when needed,
and all the love I can give them.
When my hand touches each and every horse, I
am reaching out to it to make sure it knows
that it, the horse means the world to me.
I find these horses respond to a kind and
gentle “Human Touch” with all their hearts.
I am in HORSE HEAVEN each and every day with
them.
I am so happy to be a part of Alberta,
Canada. Thank You to all who love horses as
much as I do.
