When people come to call,
I will smile and nod as I show them my dogs...
and talk of them and about them...
....the ones so beloved of the past
and the ones so beloved of today....
Tonight I thank God for
the privilege of Albert's days with our family.
He was the first puppy born on the ranch on June
15, 1998. He was delivered by my Mother, Betty
Harmon, a long time lover of German Shepherd
dogs, and who herself, passed away just two
months later.
Albert grew........and grew into a magnificient
135 pound dog. He didn't enjoy travelling. He
preferred to stay on the job at the ranch,
taking pride in protecting the home base. He was
a formidable protector, the official ranch
greeter, and was everyone's best buddy (after
the sniffing test). He adored my
grandsons and all of the school children that
came to visit. He was Big, Gentle, Uncle Al to
any canine youngsters, and newcomers, and would
take them under his wing to show them the ways
of ranch life. He also helped raise an antelope
who grew up thinking she was a German Shepherd
and adored him. Inspite of the pain of a three
year old spinal injury, Albert loved our daily
walks on the desert and would run, in his unique
"hopping" way, and enjoyed the playtime chasing
after the other dogs.
Today he closed his eyes and slipped away
quietly in his own yard. And tonight he
roams the desert with the light of the full moon
to guide him on his journey.
